Madhubani / Godhna / Maithili / Chitra paintings originated from the rituals in Madhubani district of Bihar. Predominantly popular in district Madhubani of Bihar it is also found in the districts of Jetwarpur, Ranti, Rasidpur, Rajangarh, and some others adjacent districts . Dewellers of Madhubani generally belives in God who visits every house early in the morning to exalt them with fortune and riches. 

Madhubani paintings composed in painting on walls, floors etc. meant for the God in particilar. It was entirely an ornamental art of India till 1960. After the outcome of famine of Bihar in 1964-1965 took its toll on the people of Madhubani .The victims were compelled shift from agriculture to other livelihood. Then they started the economic exploitation of the Maithili painting. Gradually from walls and floors it switched to paper, saree, dupattas and other mediums without differing the traditional ,religious and mythological themes. The majority of the Madhubani people now depend on paintings to earn their daily bread.
