Coconut trees grow every parts of Kerala, and the coconut is a fruit which is used in its wholeness. The coconut shell products for example bowls, vases, tea pots and hookahs are shaped. Lamp stands enclosed in brass and little coconut shell items are as well made in Trivandrum, Attingal and Neyyatinkara, whereas larger items are prepared in Quilandy in Kozhikode district in north Kerala. Regularly hookahs and big vases are moreover made with combination of coconut shells amid brass fastening.
Coconut fibre is unsoiled, made smooth and shaped into different dolls and toys with beads and painted threads to it go give it an ornamental look.
The procedure of the artists to shape a cup, for example, is to rub the external surface of the shell by steel wool and then make even the inner element with a chisel. A rounded base and handle of shell are connected to the cup with screws. The first coat of boot polish is applied following which a finishing coat of French polish.
