Pichwai Painting is a variety of conventional fabric painting that is deep-rooted in Rajasthan , India. Pichwais are more sophisticated and exhaustive than Phads. They are produced and used as backdrops in the Shrinathji temple situated at Nathdwara and in other temples of Lord Krishna.
The focal theme of these paintings is Shrinathji along with his exploits. Pichwais are painted, woven, printed with hand blocks, decorated in applique and also embroidered. Pichwais are prepared in dark rich hues on uneven hand spun cloth.
Pichwai paintings have profound religious roots and the artworks are performed with the extreme devotion of the painters. Currently Pichwais are painted in Udaipur and Nathdwara. The pichwai of Nathdwara is an embroidered cloth-hanging mostly used for decoration in temples and the temple-chariots.
