The Santhal tribe, one of the eminent tribes belonging to the state of Bihar , India , has a distinctive technique of painting, well-known as Santhal paintings. Basically freehand painted, these two dimensional paintings replicate their perception of life. The third dimension, the deepness is all the time lacking in these paintings thus reflecting the effortlessness of the artist. Occasionally these paintings also inform how simple and colorful their thoughts can be. At times they lay colors to the blandest creation of the nature. These artworks can be seen as the expression of their aspiration to color the nature too, if thought philosophically. The bodies of the diverse forms which they paint are rarely or perhaps not at all in single shade, they are for all time dotted, striped or filled with any geometrical pattern. The paintings are prepared on a handmade paper using poster colors. The topics are chosen from the natural surroundings or from the activities of their everyday lives. The harvest, a happy family, a field, dance, quarrel, beating wife, gods and goddess, wine party almost the whole lot finds an expression on the canvas of these tribal people.
