Uttar Pradesh is a significant hub for hand-block printing with the traditional butis, paisley designs and the tree of life as the major conventional motifs used in a variety of shapes and in gallant medium and bright patterns. Motivated by Muslim architecture, the tree of life motif bears an Indo-Persian touch. It has floral patterns and bouquet in section in crimson, rose, not shiny brown, supple yellow, blue and green set alongside arches having shape of mihrabs, together with proportioned trees and jali shapes with border of calligraph and inlaid design.
A set of paisley motifs are found in the hand block printed fabrics of Lucknow, whilst the chikan embroidery motifs are much admired in other printing hub of Uttar Pradesh. Jehangirabad, a further printing zone, is reputed for toned down colours and gallant lines with the Indo Persian tradition. Tanda in Uttar Pradesh is celebrated for the meticulous printing. The key colours in use are red along with a dark blue blend with red contrast with indigo backdrop.
